Albert George Sandeman succeeded his father, George Glas Sandeman, as head of the firm in 1868, a position he held until his death in his ninetieth year in 1923.

In the meantime he had been elected a director of the Bank of England in 1866, served as Governor from 1895 to 1897, and held numerous public offices.
