Sandeman -The Toughest Wine-Growing Region in the World
The Toughest Wine-Growing Region in the World
It is an adage of viticulture that the rougher the soil is, the higher the quality of the fruit.
In Douro, probably the toughest wine-growing region in the world, this is unquestionably true.
The soil is made up of schist, a slate-like metamorphic rock.
Rich in nutrients, it has also has useful water retention properties.
Luckily, ground that is almost pure schist does produce the best grapes
- but in very small quantities.
