The Sandeman Schooner Hoopoe was built in 1865 and operated by the company for ten years.

As well as carrying wines from Cadiz and Oporto, the elegant 75-foot vessel did frequent service as a collier ship - carrying coals from Newcastle at 10 shillings a ton.

Story block

Sandeman sold the Hoopoe to the Oporto firm Charles Coverlay & Co. in 1875. Sadly, three years later, en route to Oporto out of Devon, she was lost in the English Channel, with all hands.
