Madeira at the Declaration of Independence

Historians say Madeira wine was chosen for the famous toast at the signing of the American Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776.

Madeira wine was a big favourite of George Washington. The 1st American President was even reputed to drink a bottle of it each day.

14 years later, Washington D.C. officially became the capital of America - and Madeira wine joined the celebration as well. The ceremony included raised glasses of Madeira.
